Nearly every character above is built from smaller pieces, and the piece that hints at the meaning is called the radical — 部首 bùshǒu. Radicals are one of the hardest parts of learning to read, but once you know the couple of dozen below you can make a smart guess at characters you've never met — and find any word in a Chinese dictionary. 认识部首，猜字更容易，查字典也离不开它。

8 in 10 characters · 十有八九Most characters pair a meaning clue (the radical) with a sound clue — spot both and the character almost reads itself.形声字：一半管意思，一半管声音。
