汉字的小积木

Nearly every character above is built from smaller pieces, and the piece that hints at the meaning is called the radical — 部首 bùshǒu. Radicals are one of the hardest parts of learning to read, but once you know the couple of dozen below you can make a smart guess at characters you've never met — and find any word in a Chinese dictionary. 认识部首,猜字更容易,查字典也离不开它。

8 in 10 characters · 十有八九Most characters pair a meaning clue (the radical) with a sound clue — spot both and the character almost reads itself.形声字:一半管意思,一半管声音。
部首 means "section head"Dictionaries sort every character by its radical, then by stroke count — that's how you look up a word you can't pronounce yet.查字典:先找部首,再数笔画。

Ode to the Goose · 唐 · 骆宾王 Luò Bīnwáng

Goose, goose, goose — neck curved, singing to the sky. White feathers afloat on green water, red feet paddling the clear waves.

By tradition, 骆宾王 wrote this at seven years old — which is why it is so many children's very first poem. You already know from the explorer above.
